Qatar's Short Race and Main Event Qualifying: Real-Time Updates

Opening Notes

Our correspondent will be here shortly to cover this day's short race (14:00 GMT) and qualifying (6pm).

Current Events

Formation Lap Period

The starting lap has started.

Circuit Details

There are nineteen laps around the lengthiest track in Formula One, David Croft informs us.

Countdown

The last moments is underway.

Driver Situation

One point in Max Verstappen's advantage: his fellow driver Yuki Tsunoda is ahead of him by one place. It's improbable to interfere with the team's main man.

Media Conversations

Sky's internal discussion currently: Gary Neville is with Mercedes.

Karun Chandhok is looking forward to 2026, speaking with the engineer about his promotion to Aston Martin team principal.

Grid Details

There are only sixteen vehicles on the grid. It was another poor grid-setting session for Lewis Hamilton: following his result of 20th and last in the previous race, resulting in an eighth position in the main race, he did not manage to advance of Q1 once more on Friday. The team have as a result made changes to his car configuration and so he begins from the starting area.

The team's Lance Stroll and the Alpine duo of Pierre Gasly and Colapinto are all doing likewise.

Driver Comments

"We'll use the experience for the next day," states Isack Hadjar, starting eleventh. There will be a lot of that.

Constructors' Championship

The focus isn't solely on the individual championship: McLaren have run away with the team championship but Mercedes, with a forty-point advantage over Red Bull, will be hoping to seal second place during this event. Russell can assist in this goal from second place, and Kimi Antonelli will start just behind the leader.

Past Performance

Oscar Piastri was victorious then – as he managed the previous season, too. The driver from McLaren is going for a hat-trick.

Sprint Race Value

Right, just over twenty minutes to go till the sprint race gets under way. Unless something goes wrong, it's greatest value is as an indication of what is to come, rather than significant in its own right, with just eight championship points available to the winner. Mind you, the runner-up spot in this race was enough for the driver to claim the title in a prior season.

The driver claimed the championship after Pérez crashes out of Qatar GP sprint race.
